The Press Information Bureau (PIB) has flagged a false claim circulating widely on social media, which alleges that Pakistan carried out a cyber attack disabling 70% of India’s electricity grid. In a fact-check tweet, PIB categorically denied the allegation, calling it “fake”.
The tweet is part of India’s ongoing effort to counter false narratives, especially during times of heightened tensions, as Pakistan continues to amplify propaganda through misleading online content.
In the past few days, India has fact-checked multiple fake videos, images and other misinformation that has been doing the rounds of social media.
A day before on Friday, the Centre had also dismissed false claims suggesting that a Pakistani missile had hit India’s S-400 air defence system. It clarified that the image being shared online was actually from a fire at a military facility in Moscow in 2023.
According to the government, a large portion of the misinformation is being spread through Pakistani social media accounts. This includes fake images and outdated videos falsely linked to India’s military action, referred to as ‘Operation Sindoor’.
In one such case, videos circulated online claimed to show an Indian Air Force helicopter crashing during the operation. However, the government’s fact-checking team confirmed that the footage was from a 2019 incident involving a Mi-17 V5 helicopter that went down near Budgam in Jammu and Kashmir, and was unrelated to current events.
