Rajiv Kumar, Chief Election Commissioner of India, announced the polling dates for the Haryans and Jammu and Kashmir assembly elections. Haryana is scheduled to be held in a single phase on October 1, 2024 while elections in Jammu and Kashmir will be held in three phases, starting on September 18, 2024. Results for both the states will be declared on October 4, 2024, the announcements made during the press conference.
In Haryana, the elections will see voters casting their ballots for 90 assembly seats, of which 73 are general and 17 are reserved for Scheduled Castes (SC). ECI announced that the final electoral rolls for Haryana and Jammu & Kashmir will be published on August 27 and August 20, respectively. Haryana’s voter list will include 2.01 crore voters, with 1.06 crore males, 0.95 crore females, 4.52 lakh first-time voters, and 40.95 lakh young voters.
The Jammu and Kashmir region has 90 assembly constituencies, comprising 74 general, 7 SC, and 9 ST seats. The voter population in Jammu and Kashmir totals 87.09 lakh, with 44.46 lakh males, 42.62 lakh females, 3.71 lakh first-time voters, and 20.7 lakh young voters. The electoral roll for the region will be finalised on August 20, following the conclusion of the Amarnath Yatra on August 19.
The elections in both regions are expected to be closely watched, with significant participation from first-time and young voters.
