Union Minister Nitin Gadkari emphasised that a true test of democracy lies in a leader’s ability to accept even the strongest criticism and reflect on it. “The biggest test of democracy is that the ruler tolerates the strongest opinions against him and introspects over them,” he remarked.
Gadkari, a senior BJP leader, also encouraged writers and intellectuals to express their thoughts freely and fearlessly. “It is expected from literary figures, intellectuals, and poets that they openly and strongly share their views and opinions,” he added.
He noted that the real issue in today’s discourse is not disagreement but a lack of diverse opinions. “We are neither right-wing nor left-wing; we are opportunists. Writers and intellectuals should express their opinions without fear,” he said.
Gadkari further highlighted that the nation-building process remains incomplete as long as social issues like untouchability and notions of inferiority or superiority persist.
Speaking at the College of Engineering Pune (COEP) during an Engineers’ Day event, Gadkari also stressed the importance of transparency and timely decision-making. He questioned the value of laws if people fail to understand their spirit and purpose.
“There is a difference between letter and spirit. If a knowledgeable person does not understand the intent behind a law, then what is the use? Sometimes, even to fill potholes, one needs a boss’s order. At other times, when funds are available, work begins immediately. There is a need for transparency and a time-bound decision-making process,” Gadkari concluded.
