The Delhi High Court on Thursday granted two-week interim bail to expelled BJP leader Kuldeep Singh Sengar on medical grounds. Sengar, who is serving a life sentence for raping a minor in Unnao in 2017, will be admitted to AIIMS-Delhi for medical evaluation. The bench, led by Justice Prathiba M Singh, suspended his sentence temporarily and directed that he remain in Delhi after being discharged.
The court considered both the medical condition of Sengar and the history of the case before granting bail. A medical board at AIIMS has been instructed to provide a report, with the matter scheduled for hearing again on December 20.
In addition to his life sentence for the Unnao rape, Sengar is also serving a 10-year term for the custodial death of the victim’s father. His plea for interim bail in this case is still under consideration by another bench of the Delhi High Court.
Sengar sought interim bail, citing health issues, including cataracts, that required urgent medical attention. The victim’s lawyer and the CBI opposed the request.
Sengar’s appeal challenging his life sentence in the Unnao rape case is still pending. He has also sought to quash the trial court’s December 2019 judgment, which sentenced him to life imprisonment. The rape victim, a minor at the time, was kidnapped and assaulted by Sengar in 2017.
Sengar was also sentenced to 10 years’ imprisonment in the custodial death case. The victim’s father, arrested under Sengar’s orders in connection with a case under the Arms Act, died in custody in 2018. The case and other related matters were transferred to Delhi by the Supreme Court in August 2019.
