Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) chief Arvind Kejriwal on Saturday promised to waive off “inflated” water bills in Delhi if his party secures victory in the upcoming assembly elections to be held next month.
Addressing a press conference, Kejriwal alleged that residents were receiving exorbitant water bills—ranging from thousands to lakhs of rupees—due to mismanagement by the Delhi Jal Board. He claimed the problem worsened after his recent arrest.
“Our government in Delhi has been providing free water to people for the last 10 years. More than 12 lakh families get 0 water bills. But after I went to jail, I don’t know what these people did. They did something wrong and people started getting water bills of thousands and lakhs of rupees every month,” Kejriwal said, ANI reported.
Kejriwal also highlighted AAP’s flagship initiative of providing 20,000 liters of free water monthly, which he said has benefited over 12 lakh households in Delhi over the last decade. He attributed the sudden rise in bills to administrative lapses during his absence.
“I have said this earlier, but today I am making a formal announcement: when AAP comes back to power after the assembly polls, these inflated bills will be waived. Those who think their bills are incorrect need not pay them,” the former Delhi chief minister said, as per PTI.
AAP, which has governed Delhi since 2015, is seeking a fourth consecutive term in the upcoming 70-seat assembly elections.
