The Congress secured the Dehra Assembly seat for the first time with its candidate Kamlesh Thakur, the wife of Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu on Saturday. Kamlesh Thakur defeated BJP candidate Hoshiyar Singh by a margin of 9,399 votes, according to Election Commission of India data.
Thakur received 32,737 votes in the bypoll, compared to Singh’s 23,338 votes. The three Independent candidates in this seat each garnered fewer than 200 votes.
Out of 86,520 registered voters in this assembly segment, 65.42 percent cast their ballots on July 10.
The Dehra Assembly constituency was established following a delimitation exercise in 2012. Senior BJP leader and former minister Ravi Inder Singh was elected from the seat in 2012. Hoshiyar Singh won the seat as an Independent in both 2017 and 2022.
