Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday announced that his government is enforcing stricter rules that will result in harsh penalties for crimes against women.
Speaking at a Lakhpati Didi rally in Jalgaon, north Maharashtra, Modi stated that in the ten years since Independence, his government has done more for women than all previous governments together. “Till 2014, less than Rs 25,000 crore loans were given to women self-help groups but in the last 10 years, Rs 9 lakh crore help was given,” Modi said.
He further spoke about the recent national outcry over incidents such as the Assam gangrape, the Badlapur school sex abuse case and the rape and murder of trainee doctor in Kolkata. He declared that everyone found guilty, regardless of standing or connections, shall endure severe punishment. “I would like to reiterate to every political party and every state government that crimes against women are unpardonable. The guilty should not be spared, no matter who he is,” he added.
He also said that individuals who assist those who have committed crimes against women shouldn’t be spared. He added that negligence at any level be it hospital, school, office or policy system should be taken to task. Maintaining women’s safety and dignity is the responsibility of both society and the government. The Prime Minister declared, “We are fortifying and tightening the laws against those who commit crimes against women.”
The Prime Minister highlighted the government’s dedication to fortifying legal frameworks and enforcement mechanisms, which includes introducing modifications to current legislation and establishing new procedures to facilitate victims’ access to justice.
