The Supreme Court on Saturday stayed a Calcutta High Court single bench order of CBI probe in alleged irregularities in issuance of reserved category certificates, reports PTI.
A five-judge bench of the Supreme Court on Saturday held a special sitting to consider the developments in the Calcutta High Court, where a sitting judge accused a fellow judge of “acting clearly for some political party”, reports The Indian Express.
After taking suo motu cognisance of the developments on Friday, Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud had set up the bench, comprising Justices Sanjiv Khanna, B R Gavai, Surya Kant and Aniruddha Bose, along with him.
The top court also issued notice to the state government and the original petitioner in the reserved category certificate irregularity case. The matter will be next heard on January 29.
On Wednesday, a single-judge bench of Justice Gangopadhyay of the Calcutta High Court had ordered a CBI probe into the irregularities in admission of MBBS candidates in state-run medical colleges and hospitals.
Meanwhile, the state government moved the division bench of Justices Sen and Uday Kumar, which ordered an interim stay in the single-bench order.
Justice Gangopadhyay, in a written order, levelled accusations against fellow judge Justice Soumen Sen.
