The proceedings of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) House descended into chaos on Wednesday, March 19, as councillors from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) engaged in heated clashes during a crucial budget session. The session, convened to finalize the budget for the 2024-25 and 2025-26 financial years, was marred by disruptions, slogans, and protests from all sides.

‘BJP murdabad’ slogans raised
The high-voltage drama unfolded as rival councillors hurled slogans at each other, with chants of “BJP murdabad” and “Aam Aadmi Party haaye haaye” echoing through the chamber. Congress members also joined the protests, holding banners that read, “Constitution is our identity. Stop killing the Constitution. Have some shame.” AAP councillors strongly objected to what they termed as “attacks on the Dalit mayor,” while the BJP countered with allegations of mismanagement and corruption.
Mayor accuses BJP of disrupting proceedings
MCD Mayor Mahesh Khichi accused BJP councillors of deliberately derailing the session. “They snatched the microphone from me and tore up the list of key discussion points,” Khichi claimed at a press conference. He lamented that opposition members had been consistently obstructing proceedings, making meaningful discussions impossible for the past two years.
BJP-AAP blame game
Leader of Opposition, BJP’s Raja Iqbal Singh, criticized AAP and Congress, calling them “partners in crime” and accusing them of misusing funds meant for Delhi’s development. Meanwhile, AAP Councillor Shagufta Chaudhary blamed the BJP for continuous disruptions. “Two and a half years have passed like this. BJP has never allowed the House to function properly even once,” she told PTI after the session was adjourned.
