The bypolls held alongside the assembly elections in several states across the country brought a mix of landmark victories and surprising setbacks, reflecting the evolving political dynamics in the country. The ruling parties dominated in the assembly bye-election results announced on Saturday, with the BJP and its allies securing victories in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and Rajasthan, while the Trinamool Congress emerged victorious in West Bengal. Out of the 46 seats contested, the BJP and its allies won 26, gaining nine seats. In contrast, the Congress secured seven seats, marking a loss of six seats compared to previous results.

Here’s a comprehensive look at the key outcomes and notable winners:

Priyanka Gandhi Triumphs in Wayanad

Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi made history by securing her maiden electoral victory, winning the Wayanad Lok Sabha seat in Kerala. She defeated CPI(M)-led LDF candidate Sathyan Mokeri with a massive margin of over 4.1 lakh votes. Priyanka’s tally of 6,22,338 votes was slightly below her brother Rahul Gandhi’s total from earlier elections but exceeded his victory margin, signalling her strong debut in electoral politics.

BJP’s Dominance in Uttar Pradesh

The BJP reinforced its stronghold in Uttar Pradesh, clinching seven of the nine assembly seats in bypolls. Victories in key constituencies like Ghaziabad, Khair, and Phulpur highlighted the party’s widespread support. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath attributed the results to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, describing the outcome as a blow to the Samajwadi Party (SP)-led INDIA bloc.

Rajasthan: BJP Secures Key Wins

In Rajasthan, the BJP continued its winning streak, capturing five out of seven assembly seats, including high-profile constituencies such as Jhunjhunu and Deoli-Uniara. The Congress managed to retain the Dausa seat, while the Bharat Adivasi Party (BAP) won the tribal-dominated Chorasi constituency. BJP’s Rajendra Bhamboo secured victory in Jhunjhunu, Rajendra Gurjar triumphed in Deoli-Uniara, Rewant Ram Danga won in Khinwsar, Shanta Amrit Lal Meena claimed the Salumbar seat, and Sukhavant Singh emerged victorious in Ramgarh. Anil Kumar Katara of the BAP won the Chorasi seat, while Congress retained Dausa. The BJP had fielded Cabinet Minister Kirodi Lal Meena’s brother, Jag Mohan, for the Dausa seat. His defeat dealt a significant blow to both Meena and the ruling BJP. The results boosted the BJP’s strength in the state assembly to 119 seats.

Punjab: AAP Gains Momentum

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) made significant inroads in Punjab, winning three seats—Gidderbaha, Dera Baba Nanak, and Chabbewal. However, Congress retained the Barnala seat, offering a silver lining amid AAP’s growing influence. The BJP struggled in the state, failing to win any constituency.

BJP’s Victory in Gujarat

In Gujarat, the BJP retained its dominance by capturing the Vav assembly seat, previously held by Congress. BJP’s Swarupji Thakor edged out his rival Gulabsinh Rajput with a narrow margin, cementing the party’s foothold in the state.

NDA Sweeps Bihar

The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) swept the bypolls in Bihar, winning four assembly constituencies, including key seats like Imamganj and Tarari. The INDIA bloc suffered losses, with Jan Suraaj, the new party led by Prashant Kishor, failing to secure any seat. Bypoll was held in Imamganj, Tarari, Ramgarh and Belaganj assembly segments.

West Bengal: TMC Reigns Supreme

The Trinamool Congress (TMC) dominated West Bengal’s bypolls, retaining five seats and wresting Madarihat from the BJP. This clean sweep further consolidates TMC’s political stronghold in the state. The bypolls were held in six constituencies — Naihati, Haroa, Medinipur, Taldangra, Sitai (SC), and Madarihat (ST) — following the resignation of MLAs who had vacated their assembly seats after securing victories in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

Assam: BJP and Allies Shine

In Assam, the BJP and its allies- AGP, and UPPL- swept all five assembly constituencies in bypolls. BJP’s Diplu Ranjan Sarmah captured the high-profile Samaguri seat, marking a significant victory against Congress. The results underline the NDA’s continued dominance in the northeastern state.

BJP ally NPP wins Meghalaya’s Gambegre

In Meghalaya’s Gambegre assembly constituency, Mehtab Chandee Agitok Sangma, the ruling National People’s Party (NPP) candidate and wife of the Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, secured victory with a margin exceeding 4,500 votes. The NPP, which forms part of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) at the central level, further solidified its influence in the state with this win.

Setbacks for BJP in Madhya Pradesh

The Congress clinched a victory in the Vijaypur assembly bypoll, defeating BJP candidate and former minister Ramniwas Rawat. The result was a significant blow to the BJP, as Rawat had switched from Congress to the saffron party, hoping to retain his influence.

Congress sweeps Karnataka

The ruling Congress in Karnataka achieved a major victory by sweeping by-polls in Sandur, Shiggaon, and Channapatna, dealing a blow to the BJP-JD(S) alliance. Congress retained its Sandur stronghold and flipped Shiggaon and Channapatna from BJP and JD(S). Notable wins included CP Yogeeshwara in Channapatna, Yasir Ahmed Khan Pathan in Shiggaon, and E Annapoorna in Sandur. The results are seen as a strong endorsement of Chief Minister Siddaramaiah’s leadership and Congress’ welfare schemes amid fierce opposition attacks.

BJP secures Chhattisgarh’s Raipur City South assembly

The BJP secured a decisive victory in the Raipur City South assembly seat on Saturday, with its candidate Sunil Kumar Soni defeating Congress rival Akash Sharma by a substantial margin of 46,167 votes. Despite speculations of a competitive contest in the absence of BJP stalwart Brijmohan Agrawal, who previously dominated the seat, Congress failed to gain ground. Soni garnered 89,220 votes, while Sharma managed 43,053, reaffirming the BJP’s stronghold in the constituency.

In Uttarakhand, BJP retains Kedarnath Assembly seat

The BJP retained the Kedarnath Assembly seat in Uttarakhand on Saturday, with Asha Nautiyal, the state Mahila Morcha president, defeating Congress candidate Manoj Rawat by 5,622 votes. Nautiyal, a seasoned politician, secured her third victory from this constituency, having previously won in 2002 and 2007. She maintained a consistent lead throughout the counting process, ultimately receiving 23,814 votes. Rawat garnered 18,192 votes, while Independent candidate Tribhuvan Singh finished third with 9,311 votes, according to the Election Commission.

The bypoll results reflect a mix of consolidation for the ruling NDA in key states and emerging challenges for opposition alliances. With Priyanka Gandhi’s landmark victory in Kerala and the BJP’s continued dominance across multiple states, the political narrative ahead of the next general elections is beginning to take shape.
