Protests erupted in Bihar’s Bhagalpur district on Sunday after idols in a temple were discovered vandalised, police said. One person has been arrested in connection with the incident in the Sanhaula police station area.

Security forces staged a flag march as demonstrators burned tires and blocked roads.

According to officials, the incident took place in the Sanhaula police station area, where idols of several deities at a temple near a pond were desecrated on Saturday night by some unidentified persons, PTI reported.

Angered by the act, residents staged demonstrations, blocking roads and burning tyres. In response, security forces conducted a flag march to maintain order.

“The situation is completely under control and a flag march was staged by the security personnel in the locality. We request people not to pay attention to rumours,” the Bhagalpur district police said in a statement.

A case has been registered, and investigations into the temple desecration are ongoing.
