An Army major and his wife have been taken into custody in Assam’s Dima Hasao district on allegations of subjecting their domestic help to torture, a senior police official said on Tuesday.

Superintendent of Police, Dima Hasao, Mayank Kumar, disclosed that information was received on Sunday concerning the severe mistreatment of a minor girl who had accompanied the couple to Palampur in Himachal Pradesh.

Kumar revealed that a case has been officially registered at the Haflong Police Station under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, the SC and ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.

“During the investigation, prima facie evidence was found against the Army major and his wife, and they were arrested in connection with the case and forwarded to judicial custody,” stated the SP.

He further emphasised that all necessary support is being extended to the young girl, including access to medical care.

“Further probe is underway. Strict action will be taken based on the outcome of the investigation,” Kumar affirmed.
