Sajjan Kumar, former Congress MP has been convicted in a case related to the murders of two persons in the Saraswati Vihar area during the anti-Sikh riots. The judgement came by a Delhi court on Wednesday, special judge Kaveri Baweja passed the conviction order and posted the argument on sentence on February 18.
The convicted MP was produced before the court from Tihar jail for the pronouncement.
The case pertains to the murders of Jaswant Singh and his son Tarundeep Singh on November 1, 1984. Initially, the Punjabi Bagh police station registered the case, but a special investigation team later took over the inquiry. On December 16, 2021, the court framed charges against Kumar, finding a “prima facie” case against him.
Claims
The prosecution claims that a large mob, armed with deadly weapons, engaged in widespread looting, arson, and destruction of Sikh properties in retaliation for the assassination of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.
The mob allegedly attacked the house of the complainant, Jaswant’s wife, killing both Jaswant and his son, in addition to looting their belongings and setting their house on fire. In its ruling, the court determined there was enough evidence to form a “prima facie” opinion that Kumar not only participated in the attack but also played a leading role in orchestrating the mob’s actions.
