A 44-year-old widow’s alleged attempt to attack her former lover with acid in Nandalur, Andhra Pradesh, on Sunday has led to the cancellation of his wedding, police said.

Jaya, 44, a former software engineer with a 22-year-old son, confronted her ex-lover, Sheikh Syed, 32, at his wedding venue in Aravapalli village, Nandalur mandal, around 11 am on Sunday. He was preparing to marry another woman without her knowledge.

A police official stated that the pair had been in a 10-year relationship, but Syed had left for Kuwait three years ago to work as a driver. After he returned to India, he was preparing to marry another woman on Sunday.

“During the confrontation, Syed declared that he would not stay with Jaya and in a fit of rage she tried to attack him with bathroom cleaning acid but he dodged it. The acid fell on Syed’s aunt,” the police official told PTI.

Syed’s aunt did not sustain serious injuries, as the substance involved was bathroom cleaning acid. Meanwhile, the bridegroom responded with a ceremonial knife typically used for wedding adornments, causing minor injuries to Jaya, whose last name is not known.

The police have filed charges against both parties under the applicable sections and have taken them into custody.
