Union Home Minister Amit Shah reviewed the security situation and troop deployment in Manipur for the second consecutive day on Monday, emphasising the need for swift restoration of peace and order, according to sources.

The Union Home Ministry is deploying an additional 5,000 paramilitary personnel to assist the state government in managing the “volatile” situation in the Northeastern state.

Shah held discussions with senior officials from both the central and state governments, assessing the deployment of central forces and directing immediate measures to stabilise the region.

Manipur has been grappling with prolonged ethnic tensions since May of the previous year, primarily involving clashes between the Meitei and Kuki-Zo communities over issues of land rights, political representation, and identity.

The situation has remained volatile, with frequent outbreaks of violence disrupting normalcy in the region. The recent recovery of the bodies of women and children, allegedly victims of earlier violence, has reignited tensions, leading to widespread protests and fresh clashes. This tragic discovery has deepened the mistrust between communities and highlighted the challenges of restoring peace and justice in the state.
