Air India on Saturday announced that it has started disbursing interim compensation of Rs 25 lakh each to the families of those who died or survived the tragic June 12 crash of Flight AI 171 in Ahmedabad. The airline said this is part of its effort to support the impacted families both financially and emotionally during this difficult time.
In an official statement, Air India confirmed that the interim payments began on June 20, with three families having already received the compensation and the rest currently being processed.
This compensation is in addition to the Rs 1 crore per deceased person announced earlier by Tata Sons, the airline’s parent company.
To streamline the process, a centralised helpdesk has been operational since June 15. It is acting as a single-window system to assist families with documentation and speed up the compensation process.
To support the emotional needs of affected individuals, the airline has deployed a team of trained psychologists and doctors in Ahmedabad. This includes trauma counselling, psychological support, and a team of nurses and a pharmacist to attend to health-related needs.
Air India said it is also in contact with families of ground victims and injured survivors, assisting them with compensation and coordinating DNA identification, transport of mortal remains, and funeral arrangements. At least one caregiver from the airline is accompanying each family during this process to ensure dignity and support.
Beyond financial aid, families are being offered comprehensive assistance that includes travel, accommodation, medical care, and funeral expenses, with additional needs being addressed on a case-by-case basis.
The June 12 crash of the airline’s Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner had claimed the lives of several passengers and individuals on the ground after the aircraft lost control shortly after take-off.
