Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s wife Sunita Kejriwal on Friday said his arrest by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) was a “betrayal” with the people of Delhi.
In a post in Hindi on X, Sunita Kejriwal said, “Modi-ji got your thrice-elected chief minister arrested due to his arrogance of power and is trying to crush everyone. This is a betrayal with the people of Delhi. Your chief minister has always stood with you. Whether inside (jail) or outside, his life is dedicated to the country. The public is supreme and knows everything. Jai Hind.”
Kejriwal, national convenor of the Aam Aadmi Party, was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Thursday night in connection with an excise policy-linked money laundering ‘scam’ case. A day later, the Rouse Avenue Court in Delhi sent him to 7-day ED custody till March 28.
Who is Sunita Kejriwal?
In 2016, Sunita Kejriwal took voluntary retirement from the Indian Revenue Service (IRS), after serving for nearly 22 years in the Income Tax department, according to PTI.
She was last posted as Commissioner of I-T in the Income Tax Appellate Tribunal (ITAT) in Delhi.
A 1993-batch IRS officer, Sunita had met Arvind Kejriwal, a 1995-batch IRS officer, during a training programme at Bhopal following they decided to get hitched.
She holds a Masters degree in Zoology.
Meanwhile, in his first reaction since his arrest on Thursday evening, Kejriwal, while being produced before the Rouse Avenue court in the case, told reporters that his “life is dedicated to the nation whether he is inside jail or outside”.
Hundreds of AAP workers and leaders took the streets against the BJP over his arrest, raising slogans of “Arvind tum sangharsh karo, hum tumhare sath hain” and “tyranny won’t last”.
More than 150 demonstrators, including Cabinet ministers Atishi and Saurabh Bharadwaj, were detained by police. They were released later.
