Two strong earthquakes were recorded in the early hours of Tuesday in the Bay of Bengal and the Nicobar Islands region. The first tremor, measuring 6.3 on the Richter scale, struck the Bay of Bengal at 12:11 am IST, according to the National Centre for Seismology. 

The quake’s epicentre was located at a depth of 10 km, near coordinates 6.82°N and 93.37°E. Authorities are still assessing whether coastal areas or nearby islands have been affected, but there have been no immediate reports of damage or injuries.

Soon after, a second, more powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 6.5 hit the Nicobar Islands region. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported that it struck at 12:12 am IST (18:42 GMT on Monday), also at a shallow depth of 10 km. Its epicentre was around 259 km west-northwest of Sabang in Indonesia’s Aceh province.

Though tremors were felt in nearby areas, officials confirmed there is no tsunami threat, and no casualties or structural damage have been reported so far.
