In an effort to deepen their technological partnership, Russia and India are exploring opportunities for joint development and production of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). This collaboration is expected to enhance both nations’ defence capabilities, leveraging Russia’s advanced UAV technology and India’ growing aerospace sector.

Media representative of Rosoboronexport told FinancialExpress.com on the sidelines of the ongoing Aero India 2025, “A key area of focus will be the development of UAVs, utilizing Russia’s extensive experience in high-intensity combat operations and counteraction against modern air defence systems.”

Adding, “Russia’s UAV offerings are particularly competitive due to the fact that their technical design is rooted in real-world combat conditions, providing a proven advantage in both functionality and durability.”

In the words of the representative, “The Russian defence industry is also known for its flexibility and openness to technological cooperation. This approach positions Russia as an ideal partner for India, as both countries explore ways to co-develop and localize UAV production.”

“In addition to joint development, the collaboration would also involve setting up joint ventures, service centers, and even regional facilities, ensuring that both parties benefit from technological exchange and shared expertise,” the representative added. The high level of technological openness on Russia’s part could pave the way for creating a sustainable and self-sufficient UAV ecosystem in India.

FinancialExpress.com has previously reported that the Russian side is not only offering UAVs, they are also exploring opportunities where both sides can work jointly for local production, establishment of joint ventures and service centers and aligning with the customer’s requirements.

Denis Fedutinov, a Russian expert in the field of unmanned systems, editor of the specialised magazine Unmanned Aviation, told FinancialExpress.com, ‘‘The Russian industry has made a significant leap in the development of the unmanned systems industry in recent years, offering interested customers a wide range of world-class unmanned aircraft systems of various types and classes.’’

‘‘Besides, Russia’s approach to military-technical cooperation is fully in line with Indian interests as articulated in the ‘Make in India’ initiative designed to develop national competences and protect the interests of the Indian Armed Forces from politically driven risks,’’ he added.

As both countries continue to strengthen their strategic ties, this joint venture could significantly enhance their technological capabilities in UAVs and counter-UAV systems, positioning them as global leaders in this rapidly evolving domain.

Through this collaboration, India and Russia aim to push the boundaries of aerospace technology, setting the stage for further innovations that will serve defence and security needs of both sides.
