PM Modi inaugurates Z-Morh Tunnel: Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the much awaited 6.5 km Z-Morh tunnel in Jammu and Kashmir’s Ganderbal district on Monday, ensuring year-round access to the popular tourist destination Sonamarg. The PM arrived at Srinagar airport around 10:45 am. He was joined by Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, the Union Territory’s Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, and other prominent leaders.
The Z-Morh tunnel, spanning 6.5 kilometers, will ensure year-round connectivity between Srinagar and Sonamarg. Chief Minister Omar Abdullah highlighted that this development will pave the way for transforming Sonamarg into a hub for winter sports and tourism. Abdullah further added that in the coming five years, significant efforts will be made to establish Sonamarg as a prominent winter sports destination, similar to the development of Gulmarg. An increase in tourist activity is expected to boost local livelihoods, benefiting ski guides, instructors, sledge operators, ATV and snowmobile operators, as well as small businesses like restaurants and dhabas.

Perched at an altitude of over 8,650 feet, the Sonamarg Tunnel is a vital infrastructure project designed to ensure year-round connectivity between Srinagar and Sonamarg, extending towards Leh. This tunnel bypasses routes prone to landslides and avalanches, providing safer and more reliable access to the strategically significant Ladakh region.
Constructed at a cost of Rs 2,700 crore, the project spans approximately 12 kilometers and includes the main 6.4-kilometer-long Sonamarg Tunnel, an egress tunnel, and well-constructed approach roads. The tunnel’s state-of-the-art design ensures seamless travel even in extreme weather conditions.

Nestled amidst the majestic snow-covered Himalayan peaks, the tunnel is poised to significantly boost the region’s economic and tourism prospects. By enabling uninterrupted access, the project is expected to unlock opportunities for trade and attract tourists throughout the year, transforming Sonamarg into a thriving hub of activity.
