The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) carried out the trial run of a double-decker BEST on the Mumbai Coastal Road Project (MCRP) along with other regular vehicles on Saturday, The Indian Express reported.

Mumbai Coastal Road Project inauguration

Built at a total cost of Rs 13,983 crore, the MCRP comprises a network of arterial roads, underground tunnels, and bridges.

Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and Deputy Chief Ministers Devendra Fadnavis and Ajit Pawar are scheduled to inaugurate the high-speed corridor, officially named the Dharamveer Swaraj Rakshak Chhatrapati Shambaji Mumbai Coastal Road, on March 11. The same day the corridor will be thrown open to the public.

Speed limit

According to civic officials, the Coastal Road will have a maximum speed limit of 80 kmph for most sections, 60 kmph when traversing through undersea tunnels, and 40 kmph at interchanges. The speed limit for BEST buses will range between 60-70 kmph.

Interchanges will be available at Worli, Haji Ali, and Amarsons Garden, providing motorists with access to mainland routes from the carriageway.

Spanning a total length of 10.58 kilometers, the first phase of the MCRP will open 9.5 kilometers for public use initially, with the remaining 1-kilometer stretch connecting to the Bandra Worli Sea Link set to be accessible upon completion of the final under-construction bridge.

The southbound arm of the MCRP will become operational on Monday, facilitating traffic movement between Worli and Marine Drive from 8 am to 8 pm on weekdays, an official said. Approximately 15% of remaining work will be undertaken during nights and weekends.
