The Maharashtra government has approved a toll proposal for the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (MTHL), charging Rs 250 as a one-way toll for cars. This decision, made by the Eknath Shinde cabinet, reflects only half of the existing toll collection rules, as per a PTI report.
Varied Charges for Different Journeys
Passenger cars will be subject to a one-way toll of Rs 250, with distinct charges for return journeys and special considerations for daily and frequent travelers, according to an official statement.
Impact on Commuting Distance and Time
The cabinet proposal highlights a significant reduction in the distance between Panvel in Raigad district and Sewri in south-central Mumbai by 15 kilometers, reported PTI. Additionally, the travel time is expected to decrease from around two hours to a mere 15 to 20 minutes, promising substantial benefits to commuters.
Notably, the shorter travel distance is projected to save around Rs 500 per journey in fuel costs, offering financial relief to commuters.
Future Rate Revisions
As part of the cabinet decision, the toll rates for the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link will undergo a review and potential revision after one year from the commencement of operations, ensuring adaptability to changing circumstances.
Scheduled to be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on January 12, the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link, officially named the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Sewri-Nhava Sheva Atal Setu, spans 21.8 kilometers and comes with a total cost of Rs 21,200 crore, with Rs 15,000 crore raised through loans.
The MTHL, a 6-lane sea link, comprises a 16.50-kilometer stretch over the sea and a 5.50-kilometer portion on land. This ambitious infrastructure project aims to enhance connectivity and streamline travel between Panvel and Sewri.
