The Indian Railways has taken a significant step toward modernizing its operations by engaging with 23 entities, ranging from start-ups and individual innovators to MSMEs and NGOs. These entities have been chosen to provide cutting-edge technologies aimed at ensuring safe and efficient train operations across the country.
Launched under the ‘Startups for Railways’ initiative on June 13, 2022, the Indian Railways Innovation Portal has become a platform for identifying and solving key challenges in the rail sector. Issues such as effective track cleaning, timely detection of broken rails, and advanced fire/smoke detection systems for train coaches with wireless networking are among the problems addressed through this initiative.
Addressing issues effectively
The railways received a substantial response, with 1,251 entries submitted for consideration. After rigorous rounds of screening to assess the viability of their innovations, 23 entities were shortlisted for financial support. The railways has disbursed a total of Rs 43.87 crore to these entities, varying the grant amounts based on their evaluations.
Notably, three entities received the maximum grant of Rs 1.5 crore each. These include an MSME working on accurate track inspection technologies, an engineering firm developing a broken rail detection system, and an individual innovator addressing issues related to overhead equipment (OHE) design.
Preventing human accidents
In addition to the current partnerships, 59 innovators are under evaluation for solutions to six identified problems. These include critical issues such as preventing human runovers on tracks and identifying narcotics and explosives in parcel vans/freight rakes using non-invasive technological solutions.
One significant challenge revolves around preventing human accidents on tracks due to various reasons, including trespassing, safety violations, and distractions. The railways invited startups to propose technologies capable of identifying human presence and taking appropriate action. Eight companies have been shortlisted in the first stage of screening, with the railways now finalizing their selection.
