Union minister Ashwini Vaishnaw disclosed on Wednesday (February 7) that the Sabarimala railway project in Kerala has faced prolonged delays due to a lack of cooperation from the state government.

The project, also known as the Sabari rail project, aims to enhance connectivity for pilgrims visiting the Sabarimala temple. Despite persistent efforts over the years, the project has encountered obstacles related to land acquisition and matching funds from the state government.

‘Two alternative alignments under consideration’

Addressing the Lok Sabha during the question hour, Railway Minister Ashiwini Vaishnaw highlighted that two alternative alignments are currently under consideration for the Sabari rail project.

“Right now, we are working on two possible alternative alignments. One alignment will take the project line very close to the shrine and other alignment will terminate at around 25-26 km before the shrine. Once both the alignments are fully examined, then only a final decision will be taken,” Vaishnaw said.

Chengannur to Pamba railway line

Emphasising the government’s commitment to developing the railway network in Kerala, the minister mentioned the Chengannur to Pamba railway line as a crucial project. The Detailed Project Report (DPR) for this new alignment is currently in preparation, and subsequent steps will be taken once the alignment is selected.

As members sought details about specific railway stations, Speaker Om Birla suggested focusing on policy matters rather than specific station-related inquiries.
