The Western Railway is currently building a new terminus at Jogeshwari under the Amrit Bharat Station Development Scheme. The new terminus is designed to enhance access to long-distance trains and boost the punctuality of local trains traveling beyond Andheri and Churchgate. It is being built on railway land adjacent to the goods shed, situated between Ram Mandir and Jogeshwari stations on the eastern side.

Transferring express and mail trains from Mumbai Central, Dadar, and Bandra Terminus to the new Jogeshwari Terminus is anticipated to improve overall rail operations.

The terminus will also serve as a vital link for Metro passengers traveling along the Western Express Highway. Despite several upgrades over the years, no new terminal has been built to complement the historic stations of Mumbai which cater to long-distance trains — Mumbai Central, Bandra, and Dadar Terminus.

Mumbai’s Jogeshwari terminus: Progress report

At the moment over 76.48 per cent of the work at the terminus has been completed, The Indian Express reported. The project is estimated to cost Rs 70 crore approximately. As of now, the financial progress stands at 34 per cent. The deadline of the project is 2025.

Some of the work left to be done in the project include, construction of three high-level platforms – one island and one home platform. Besides this, roadwork and related infrastructure improvements need to be taken up.

Mumbai’s Jogeshwari terminus: Benefits

The new Jogeshwari Station is set to offer several significant benefits. Up to 12 long-distance trains currently departing from Bandra Terminus and Mumbai Central may be relocated to Jogeshwari, improving access for commuters from distant suburbs. The station’s platforms will be designed to accommodate mail and express trains with up to 24 coaches, enhancing capacity. Additionally, it will contribute to better regulation of local train punctuality between Andheri and Churchgate. Its proximity to Metro Line 7, Line 2A, and the forthcoming Metro Line 6 will also facilitate easier access to long-distance trains for commuters.
