The Indian Railways is planning to launch India’s first Vande Bharat Metro, aimed at revolutionising intra-city transportation, a senior official linked to the project said.
This comes at the heels of the successful induction of the Vande Bharat Express trains in India’s railway network.

The official said that all the preparations for the Vande Bharat Metro are ongoing and its trail run will commence from July 2024. Leveraging cutting-edge technology for rapid acceleration and deceleration, the Vande Metro is designed to optimise stoppage times, catering to the fast-paced urban lifestyle.
The officials have set a target to roll out the Vande Bharat Metro in 2024. “ Its testing will start in another couple of months. Besides having automatic doors and high comfort quotient, it will have many such features which are not available in currently running metro trains,” the official said. The details of the metro’s additional features, along with pictures, will be shared soon with the public.
According to Railway sources, the Vande Metro will sport a distinctive coach configuration, with each unit comprising four coaches, and a minimum of 12 coaches forming a complete Vande Metro train. Initially, a minimum of 12 Vande Metro coaches will be introduced, with the possibility of expanding to 16 coaches based on route demand.
“Initially, we will have a 12-coach metro but it can be extended to 16 coaches depending on the demand and need of the city,” the official added.
The city which will first receive the Vande Bharat Metro is being worked out.
