Earlier this month,  Union Minister of Railways Ashwini Vaishnaw inaugurated the Sahibganj-Howrah Intercity Express, a key new rail service aimed at enhancing connectivity across Jharkhand. In addition to this daily train service, the minister also announced the addition of a new stoppage at Sahibganj for the Anand Vihar-Agartala Tejas Rajdhani Express, a longstanding demand from the Santhal Pargana region. This expanded connectivity is set to bring economic, social, and infrastructural benefits to the state. Here’s a closer look at how these changes will impact Jharkhand.

New Sahibganj-Howrah Intercity Express Service

The Sahibganj-Howrah Intercity Express (Train No. 13428) will operate daily, covering approximately 350 kilometers in around 7 hours. With fares starting at Rs 125, this new service is not only a cost-effective travel option compared to the current road travel costs of Rs 700-Rs 800 but also provides a convenient schedule:

  • Departure from Sahibganj: 5:20 AM
  • Arrival at Howrah: 12:15 PM

For the return journey:

  • Departure from Howrah: 1:45 PM
  • Arrival at Sahibganj: 8:35 PM

The train will stop at key stations such as Sakrigali, Tinpahar, and Bolpur Shantiniketan, improving accessibility for residents in the region.

Tejas Rajdhani Express New Stoppage in Sahibganj

The Anand Vihar-Agartala Tejas Rajdhani Express will now have a new scheduled stop at Sahibganj, marking the first time this service has included Jharkhand in its route. This new stop aims to serve the Santhal Pargana region, meeting a longstanding demand.

Achievements and Investments in Jharkhand’s Rail Infrastructure

Union Minister Vaishnaw highlighted the recent achievements in Jharkhand’s railway infrastructure, noting that the state’s rail network has been 100% electrified and that 1,200 kilometers of new railway lines have been constructed over the last decade. Under the current administration, Jharkhand’s railway budget allocation has grown from Rs 450 crores to Rs 7,300 crores, marking a significant 16-fold increase. Additionally, Rs 56,000 crores are being invested in various rail projects, including the redevelopment of 57 stations, which aims to boost connectivity and foster economic growth.

Economic and Social Impact on Jharkhand

The enhanced rail connectivity provided by the Sahibganj-Howrah Intercity Express and the Tejas Rajdhani Express stoppage is expected to attract new industries, create job opportunities, and provide residents with better access to educational and healthcare facilities. These developments not only improve travel options but also support the region’s economic growth by making Jharkhand more accessible to businesses and investors.
