The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) on Saturday (June 1) announced that it will conduct a detailed survey at critical locations of the Lumding-Silchar section. The announcement comes in light of the arrival of monsoon season which frequently disrupts train services across vast areas of the Northeast.

The NFR officials informed that the survey will be conducted during and after the monsoon, focusing on detailed analysis of critical locations. According to a statement, this includes examining soil strata types, slope stability, natural or formed faults causing hill movement, water accumulation beneath the soil, and the formation of slip circles.

Monsoon impacts train services

Monsoon often disrupts train services in this section, with tracks getting submerged, washed away, or damaged. The tender for the survey has been awarded to Noida-based Garudauav Soft Solutions Pvt Ltd.

The survey aims to monitor the dynamic geophysical landscape and subterranean environment. This will help identify and analyze critical areas for preventive maintenance of the track environment, reducing the need for significant human interventions in landslide-prone areas.

Non-invasive sensors such as LiDAR and optical photogrammetry, along with infrared mapping, ground-penetrating radar, and airborne electromagnetic technology, will be used for the survey.

The data gathered will be analysed using artificial intelligence for better comparison and understanding, the statement added.
