A Diesel Electric Multiple Unit (DEMU) train carrying over 1,000 passengers experienced a technical malfunction on Monday (February 24) when its engine detached from the main coaches near Badayala Chaurasi station in Ratlam district.
The incident occurred around 11 am as the DEMU train, traveling from Ratlam to Jaora, was nearing Badayala Chaurasi station, located approximately 30 kilometers from the district headquarters within the Western Railway’s Ratlam division.
Fortunately, no injuries were reported, a railway official confirmed.
“A coupling—a mechanical device that connects train coaches—broke, causing the engine to detach and move ahead on its own for a short distance,” said Khemraj Meena, Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the Ratlam Railway Division.
The situation was quickly brought under control, and a replacement engine was attached to the train. After a delay of about 30 minutes, the DEMU resumed its journey toward its final destination, Chittorgarh in Rajasthan.
Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) Ashwini Kumar has ordered an investigation into the incident. A three-member committee has been formed to probe the cause of the malfunction and is expected to submit its findings within two weeks.
