The Maharashtra Cabinet on Wednesday approved a proposal to rename eight suburban railway stations in Mumbai, which currently bear British-era names. The decision was made during a cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. These stations are situated along the Western, Central, and Harbour lines of Mumbai’s suburban network, managed by the Central Railway and the Western Railway.

Which Railway Stations in Mumbai will be renamed?

The proposed changes include renaming Mumbai‘s Currey Road Station to Lalbaug, Sandhurst Road Station to Dongri, Marine Lines Station to Mumbadevi, Charni Road Station to Girgaon, Cotton Green Station to Kalachowki, Dockyard Road Station to Mazgaon, and Kings Circle to Tirthankar Parshwanath. Sandhurst Road station is considered two stations as it serves both Central and Harbour lines. Once approved by the legislature, the proposal will be forwarded to the Union Home Ministry and the Railway Ministry.

Additionally, the state government has submitted a proposal to rename Mumbai Central Station as Nana Jagannath Shankarsheth Station to the Union government. Previously, in 2017, the Union government renamed Elphinstone Road suburban station as Prabhadevi station, and Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus was modified to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT).

Ahmednagar renamed as Ahilyanagar

Following the renaming of Aurangabad and Osmanabad as Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar and Dharashiv, respectively, the Maharashtra cabinet has now approved renaming Ahmednagar to Ahilyanagar, in honor of Ahilyabai Holkar. Additionally, Velha tehsil in Pune district will be renamed as Rajgad. Velha holds historical significance as the first capital of the Maratha Empire under the leadership of the esteemed Maratha warrior king Shivaji.
