The ongoing redevelopment of Madurai Junction in Tamil Nadu is part of the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme (ABSS), that aims to modernise and enhance the facilities at the station. The project includes the construction of new terminals, multi-level parking, and skywalks, as outlined by Southern Railway. This scheme, launched in February 2023 by the Ministry of Railways, is set to upgrade 1,275 railway stations across India.

Madurai Junction: Modern Facilities for Passengers

According to Gnanasekar, Deputy Chief Engineer at Madurai Junction, the revamped railway station will offer airport-style amenities, including air-conditioned waiting halls, restaurants, retail outlets, and dedicated spaces for both commercial and specialty shops. Additionally, the station will feature multi-level parking for both two-wheelers and cars.

Southern Railways has outlined several key aspects of the redevelopment at Madurai Junction, which include the construction of a substation building, multi-level parking for two-wheelers on the eastern side, and a new East terminal building that will be developed in two phases. The project also features a modern air concourse, multi-level parking for cars on both the east and west sides, and the addition of a subway for improved connectivity.

The Amrit Bharat Station Scheme (ABSS) aims to upgrade station facilities in phases, with a focus on improving station accessibility, enhancing waiting areas, expanding toilet facilities, and offering free Wi-Fi, among other amenities to ensure a better experience for passengers.
