India’s public procurement platform, Government e-Marketplace (GeM), has facilitated the disposal of government assets worth Rs 2,200 crore over the past four years. GeM enables asset disposal through its Forward Auction module, under which government departments sell scrap, e-waste, old vehicles, machinery and leasehold properties, including buildings and land, to the highest bidder.
Between December 2021 and November 2025, the Forward Auction module conducted more than 13,000 auctions, facilitating sales exceeding Rs 2,200 crore. The platform onboarded over 23,000 registered bidders and enabled participation from more than 17,000 auctioneers, according to a statement from the Ministry of Commerce and Industry.
From EWS Flats to Boating Rights
One such transaction was the auction of 100 economically weaker section flats in Aliganj, Lucknow, conducted by State Bank of India, which realised Rs 34.53 crore through the GeM platform.
Recent auctions include the sale of unusable and obsolete articles by the National Zoological Park in New Delhi, screened gypsum worth Rs 3.35 crore by FCI Aravali Gypsum and Minerals India, the disposal of 261 condemned vehicles in Jammu division, the auction of salvage items by the Border Roads Organisation, the five-year lease of a dormitory in Gulmarg, and the auction of boating activity rights at a lake in Spurtar.
Between April and November of the current financial year, GeM facilitated transactions worth Rs 3.01 lakh crore, with order volumes rising 12.17% year-on-year to 4,44,396.
Empowering Small Enterprises
As of November 30, 2025, more than 1.125 million micro and small enterprise sellers were registered on the platform. These enterprises have cumulatively secured orders worth Rs 7.44 lakh crore, accounting for 44.8% of total order value transacted through GeM and exceeding the mandated annual procurement target of 25%.
Women-led enterprises have also increased their participation. More than 200,000 women-owned MSEs are active on the platform and have secured cumulative orders worth Rs 78,066 crore.
