Delhi’s famous Sarojini Nagar Market, along with Malcha Market and Aliganj Market, is all set to undergo a major transformation as part of a new redevelopment plan unveiled by the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC).
On Tuesday, NDMC Vice Chairman Kuljeet Singh Chahal introduced the initiative as part of Phase-I of the city’s urban renewal programme. The redevelopment aims to modernise and improve urban spaces in line with the Delhi Master Plan 2021. Sarojini Nagar, renowned for its budget-friendly fashion, will undergo a complete overhaul.
The mixed-use building will be converted into a commercial hub, with retail and commercial spaces spanning the ground, first, second, and part of the third floors. “This revamp aims to preserve the market’s cultural charm while transforming it into a more organised and modern shopping centre, attracting even more visitors and vendors,” Chahal said during a press briefing, PTI reported.
In addition to Sarojini Nagar, Malcha Market and Aliganj Market will also see significant infrastructure upgrades. These include enhanced parking facilities, smart street furniture, improved horticulture, and better public amenities to offer a more comfortable environment for both traders and customers.
Chahal also emphasised the role of market traders associations (MTAs) in shaping the redevelopment plans, ensuring that vendor concerns are addressed. This collaboration will help balance modernisation with the preservation of the markets’ unique character.
This redevelopment follows the successful upgrade of Khanna Market, which served as a model for the initiative. NDMC plans to replicate this success in other commercial hubs across the city, boosting the local economy and improving the overall quality of life for Delhi’s residents and visitors.
The transformation of Sarojini Nagar is expected to set a new benchmark for urban market spaces in the city while solidifying its place as one of Delhi’s top shopping destinations.
