Prime Minister Modi will inaugurate the Phase 2B of Mumbai Metro Aqua Line 3, which will run from Acharya Atre Chowk to Cuffe Parade. This is a significant step that is being taken to improve Mumbai’s city transport. This phase, once complete, will also complete the Aqua Line project which will make daily travel easier for millions of people.

PM Modi will officially inaugurate the final phase of the Mumbai Metro Line-3, kicking-off its final 10.99-km section from Acharya Atre Chowk to Cuffe Parade. With this, the full corridor, built at a cost of Rs 37,270 crore and connecting Cuffe Parade to Aarey JVLR, will be fully operational. 

The entire 33.5-km Colaba–Bandra–SEEPZ metro line is 33.5 km long with 27 stations and is expected to serve over 13 lakh passengers every day. Fully underground, it will connect South Mumbai’s heritage spots like Kala Ghoda and Marine Drive, as well as major administrative centres such as the Bombay High Court and RBI. The line will also link smoothly with other transport options, making travel across Mumbai faster and less crowded.

“As Mumbai’s first and only fully underground metro line, this project is set to redefine commuting across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), offering a faster, more efficient, and modern transit solution for millions of residents,” a statement from PIB reads. 

Benefits for commuters

It will reduce pressure on Mumbai’s suburban rail system by 15%, while cutting 3.54 lakh litres of fuel daily and avoiding 6.65 lakh vehicle trips. There are also several environmental efforts that have been put in like planting of over 23,000 trees and restoring mangroves. There is also focus on rehabilitating 1,941 families in flats surrounding the area and 733 families in temporary housing.

The entire Aqua Line stands as a record in India for underground metro construction, using 17 Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs), a first in the country. Once fully operational, commuters will be able to enjoy modern, safe, and efficient travel between South Mumbai and the northern suburbs.

“Metro Line 3 is expected to reduce the load of suburban Railway by 15 per cent,” Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (MMRCL) stated.

PM Modi will launch “Mumbai One”, India’s first integrated common mobility app. The platform will allow commuters to plan journeys and access multiple public transport modes beforehand. The app will integrate buses, local trains, and metro services, making commuting simpler for city residents.

Navi Mumbai International Airport: Phase 1 inauguration

During his visit, PM Modi will also inaugurate Phase 1 of the Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA). This greenfield project is designed to reduce pressure on Mumbai’s existing airport. It will provide world-class facilities for both domestic and international travellers. The airport, built on 1,160 hectares, is designed with “advanced technologies, sustainable features, and multi-modal connectivity.”
