The New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) has unveiled plans to integrate FASTag technology across all its parking facilities, marking a step forward in modernising urban infrastructure.
This initiative is designed to streamline parking operations, improve user convenience, and foster greater transparency in public services.
NDMC Vice Chairman Kuljeet Singh Chahal announced that the civic body plans to expand its parking capacity from 150 to 175 sites, catering to approximately 11,000 cars, 5,000 two-wheelers, and 200 buses.
He highlighted that key areas like Tolstoy Marg, Sarojini Nagar, Khan Market, and Connaught Place will benefit from the addition of new and upgraded parking facilities.
The NDMC will incentivise digital transactions at parking facilities by offering discounts for cashless payments, aiming to phase out traditional cash systems to simplify access and minimise transaction delays, according to the statement. The smart parking initiative will feature real-time parking availability, dynamic tariff structures, and automated enforcement mechanisms, it noted.
Additionally, residents and visitors can expect a dedicated mobile app offering live parking updates and seamless navigation.
“NDMC is also focusing on sustainability by reducing congestion and carbon emissions through efficient parking systems. Plans for multi-level parking (MLP) facilities at locations like Gole Market and stack parking in high-demand areas such as Khan Market are underway,” said Chahal.
Tenders for the expanded parking infrastructure, designed to accommodate over 9,000 cars, 4,300 two-wheelers, and 120 buses, are in their final stages, he said.
Chahal highlighted that the initiative underscores NDMC’s commitment to building a smart, sustainable, and citizen-friendly city. “These efforts will enhance urban mobility, improve public convenience and modernise New Delhi’s infrastructure in line with its status as a global city,” he added.
