The Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER) has greenlit an ambitious project to convert Sikkim’s iconic Singshore suspension bridge, located in Dentam, Gyalshing district, into a stunning glass-deck skywalk, officials confirmed. The move aims to boost tourism in the state by offering visitors breathtaking, panoramic views of the surrounding landscapes.

According to the Ministry of Tourism, the Singshore Bridge, towering over 100 meters in height and stretching 240 meters in length, is the highest bridge in Sikkim and the second-highest in Asia. This transformation into a glass skywalk is expected to enhance the tourist experience, making it a must-visit destination in the region.

The project will be overseen by the Tourism and Civil Aviation Department of Sikkim. The Singshore Bridge, previously managed by the Roads and Bridges Department, was officially transferred to the Tourism Department for technical assessments and preparatory work, as confirmed in a letter dated September 20 to the District Magistrate of Gyalshing. The chief engineer of the Tourism and Civil Aviation Department indicated that the bridge will undergo structural testing and modifications to ensure it meets safety standards for the new glass deck.

This ambitious upgrade is a part of the government’s larger efforts to promote eco-friendly and adventure tourism and is expected to transform the bridge into a major tourist attraction, significantly enhancing the local economy and providing a unique experience for thrill-seekers and nature lovers alike.

As part of the preliminary preparations, vehicular movement on the bridge has been suspended and will remain closed until September 26. Commuters have been directed to use the alternative diversion route, which is fully accessible for all types of vehicles.

The Sikkim government is hopeful that the conversion will increase footfall in the area, further supporting the state’s tourism industry and creating new opportunities for local businesses. The new glass-deck skywalk is expected to provide a unique and exhilarating experience for visitors, offering them unobstructed views of the deep gorge below and the stunning mountain ranges surrounding the bridge.

Once completed, this transformation is set to make the Singshore Bridge one of the top attractions in the Northeast, drawing not only domestic but also international tourists, eager to experience the thrill of walking on a glass deck at such heights.
