As part of the Central Vista redevelopment project, the Central Government is planning to construct an underground Metro corridor between Indraprastha station and the new national museum proposed at North Block and South Block, The Indian Express reported. The plan is to have a direct link to the Yuge Yugeen National Museum with proposed stops at Bharat Mandapam and India Gate.

According to sources from the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, a proposal has been made to connect Indraprastha with the Yuge Yugeen National Museum once the ministries currently operating from the North and South Blocks are relocated to new secretariat buildings in the coming years. In the initial phase, the museum is planned to be established at the North Block.

When asked about it, DMRC’s Anuj Dayal said that the the proposed corridor will be underground with stations at Bharat Mandapam-Supreme Court, India Gate Hexagon (2 stations), Kartavya Path, Central Secretariat (interchange), North Block and Yuge Yugeen Museum.

“The Detailed Project Report is yet to be prepared and the proposal is in its preliminary stages,” he added.

Dayal stated that the corridor will be a standard gauge with rolling stock measuring 2,900 mm.

In contrast, the first phase of the Metro was built on a broad gauge, with train coaches measuring 3,200 mm in width. Subsequent phases, such as the Violet and Green lines, adopted the narrower standard gauge with 2,900 mm wide coaches.

As part of the Central Vista redevelopment project, the government has proposed constructing new Common Central Secretariat (CCS) buildings after demolishing the existing structures. The first three CCS buildings are currently under construction on the site formerly occupied by the Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts and are scheduled for completion by April 2025.

The ministries currently housed in North Block, including Home Affairs and Finance, are anticipated to move to the newly constructed CCS 1, 2, and 3 buildings. This relocation will enable the conversion of the historic North Block building into the Yuge Yugeen National Museum.
