The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) is set to introduce a new digital feature that will enable commuters to use their smartphones as virtual smart cards. This functionality will be integrated into DMRC’s Momentum 2.0 app and will be available through existing platforms offering Delhi Metro QR tickets, such as WhatsApp, Paytm, Amazon Pay, and One Delhi.
DMRC Managing Director Vikas Kumar in a conversation with news agency PTI had informed the new feature will include a QR code for stored value, functioning like a traditional smart card but with the advantage of being virtual.
“We are planning to introduce QR for stored value. It will be like a card which will not be restricted to a single journey. It will also reduce the number of paper prints,” Kumar said.
How will virtual smart cards work?
According to PTI, the virtual card will replicate the physical smart card currently available at metro ticketing counters, but it will be stored on a smartphone. Commuters can top up their QR wallet using the DMRC mobile app and use the stored value to generate QR codes for travel.
This system eliminates the need for purchasing new physical or virtual QR tickets for each trip, making it more convenient for frequent travelers.
The virtual smart card aims to minimise reliance on physical tickets, offering a more streamlined and user-friendly option.
Passengers will also have the option to select the Delhi Metro QR ticket on Amazon Pay, choose their destination stations, make the payment, and receive their mobile QR ticket immediately.
