The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) is building three double-decker viaducts. Under the Phase 4 expansion, these viaducts will be integrating both metro rail and road traffic, a senior official revealed.
The viaducts are under construction along the Majlis Park-Maujpur, Aerocity-Tughlakabad, and Janakpuri West-RK Ashram Marg corridors, according to an official.
DMRC principal executive director Anuj Dayal said that three rail-cum-road flyovers are being built as part of the Phase 4 expansion work. “On the Majlis Park-Maujpur corridor, an integrated elevated viaduct i.e. a double-decker structure with PWD flyover at the lower deck and metro line at the upper deck is being constructed between Bhajanpura and Yamuna Vihar stations,” he added.
The double-decker structure’s construction, excluding the ramps, has been completed, an official stated. The road ramp will be finished once the required tree-cutting permissions are obtained.
Meanwhile, work on another double-decker viaduct at the Ambedkar Nagar T Point, part of the Aerocity-Tughlakabad corridor in Phase-4, is ongoing.
Pier cap launching for the metro level has commenced, and crossbeam installation for the road flyover level is underway. This will be South Delhi’s first such project, featuring a metro line and a road flyover built one above the other—the road flyover at level 1 and the metro track at level 2, the official added.
Additionally, a 630-meter-long double-decker section is being constructed on the Janakpuri West–RK Ashram Marg corridor, between Azadpur and Ashok Vihar. Foundation work on this section is nearly complete, and pier work is in its final stages, said Dayal.
The DMRC earlier announced a target of 2026 for making the new 65-kilometer network operational.
Although construction for the Phase-4 expansion began in December 2019, progress was significantly delayed between 2020 and 2022 due to the Covid-19 pandemic and challenges in obtaining tree-cutting permissions.
The DMRC is working on a 65.2-kilometer stretch across 45 stations as part of the project’s three priority corridors: Janakpuri West-RK Ashram Marg (28.92 km), Majlis Park-Maujpur (12.55 km), which are extensions of the operational Magenta and Pink Lines, and the Aerocity-Tughlakabad Corridor (23.62 km), linking the Violet Line and Airport Line at their respective ends.
