In August 2024, Chennai Metro Rail (CMRL) saw an unprecedented surge in passenger numbers, with nearly one crore individuals traveling on its trains, marking the highest monthly ridership since the Metro’s inception. According to CMRL’s official announcement, a total of 95,43,625 passengers utilized the Metro services from August 1 to August 31, 2024. This is the highest number of passengers recorded since the commencement of Metro train services in Chennai.
This notable increase represents a rise of 8,606 passengers compared to July 2024. Throughout the year, ridership figures have shown a steady upward trend. In January, 84,63,384 passengers used the Metro, which grew to 86,15,008 in February. March saw a further rise with 86,82,457 passengers.
Despite a dip in April with 80,87,712 passengers, the numbers picked up again in May to 84,21,072, nearly matching January’s figures. June saw a slight increase to 84,33,837 passengers. July experienced a significant rise, with 95,35,019 passengers, a trend that continued into August, setting a new record with 95.43 lakh passengers.
The highest single-day ridership for August was recorded on August 14, 2024, with 3,69,547 passengers.
Since its phased launch in June 2015, covering 45.046 km across two corridors in phase I, Chennai Metro Rail has been committed to providing safe, efficient, and reliable transportation for the city’s residents.
