The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has been engaged as the turn-key consultant for the inaugural phase of the Bhubaneswar Metro, spanning from the airport to Trishulia Square in Cuttack, the officials informed on Monday (November 20).

An agreement, formalised through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Bhubaneswar Metro Rail Corporation and the DMRC, outlines the completion of the project within four years. 

Significant milestone in Odisha’s transportation history

Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik sees this collaboration as a significant milestone in Odisha’s transportation history, symbolizing a transformation in the state’s capital region. 

“We are now poised to transform the transportation landscape in the state’s capital region. This is a flagship programme under the 5T (teamwork, technology, transparency, timely completion leading to transformation) initiative of the government that will also symbolise the emergence of a new Odisha,” Patnaik said.

Bhubaneswar Metro Phase-I to cost Rs 6,255 crore

The first phase, amounting to Rs 6,255 crore, marks the largest single investment in any infrastructure project within the state. The entire project cost will be covered by the state government. 

Patnaik expressed satisfaction in delivering another promise from the 2019 manifesto and emphasized DMRC’s expertise in metro rail construction and operation. “I am happy that my government is delivering yet another promise that was made in our 2019 manifesto” the chief minister said.

He anticipates the Bhubaneswar Metro to meet world-class standards and adhere to the scheduled timeline. 

Bhubaneswar Metro Phase-I: 26 km length with 20 stations

The first phase will encompass 26 km with 20 elevated stations, promoting transit-oriented development in Odisha.

The event was also attended by Housing & Urban Development Minister Usha Devi, Science & Technology Minister Ashok Panda, and Chief Secretary PK Jena. 

DMRC MD Vikas Kumar expressed that the current period is opportune for initiating transit-oriented development in Odisha. He emphasised that such initiatives would invigorate the economy and foster growth and development in the region.
