Bengaluru Metro’s Yellow Line is set to receive its first driverless train set from Kolkata-based Titagarh Rail Systems Limited (TRSL) by the end of this year or early next year, The Indian Express reported. Titagarh was expected to deliver its first train set by August 2024.
Connecting RV Road to Bommasandra via Electronic City, the yellow line is 18-kilometres.
Titagarh Rail Systems Deputy Managing Director Prithish Chowdhary told IE that manufacturing of the train set is nearly complete. “ Titagarh is focused on dispatching the first localised train set for the Bangalore Metro 4RS-DM project by the end of December or early January 2025,” he added.
As per Chowdhary, the trains are being put through “rigorous testing at various stations”. “These trains are built to cater to customer requirements and follow stringent quality standards. This will mark a significant milestone as it will be the first localised stainless-steel trainset produced by Titagarh and CRRC for this project,” he further said.
Shortly after the first delivery, Titagarh will up its production to make two train sets per month.
Chowdhary also said that following the delivery of the first train set, and with the establishment of processes, Titagarh will ramp up production to two train sets per month shortly after the first train set’s delivery.
Bengaluru Metro Yellow Line
The Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited’s Hebbagodi depot had received the first communication-based train control system prototype train from China in February 2024.
BMRCL Managing Director Maheshwar Rao expressed optimism about beginning operations on the Yellow Line in January 2025 with just three trains, depending on the timely delivery of train sets by the end of December. In October, he mentioned that BMRCL anticipated receiving the first train from Titagarh by the first week of December and a second by the month’s end. With these trains, BMRCL aimed to operationalise the Yellow Line between the second and final weeks of January.
With the second train set now expected to arrive by late December or January 2025, and the third train set to follow in phases, the likelihood of operationalising the Yellow Line between the second and final weeks of January seems uncertain.
