The Directorate of Urban Land Transport (DULT) has commissioned a study to evaluate the feasibility of expanding and installing bicycle docks at 10 additional Bengaluru Metro stations, The Indian Express reported.

The DULT, in partnership with Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL), previously launched a pilot project to design, implement, and fund cycle stands and pedal ports at 10 Bengaluru Metro stations. This initiative aims to boost last-mile connectivity and encourage sustainable transportation.

The newly selected Metro stations for expanding cycle parking facilities include Kengeri Bus Terminal, KR Puram, Madavara, Chikkabidarakallu, Manjunatha Nagara, Dasarahalli, National College, Banashankari, Jaya Prakash Nagar, and Silk Institute.

Each of these stations is expected to receive cycle modules, with some stations also featuring covered cycle stands and surface treatment. These Metro stations were chosen based on factors such as ridership, land availability, available space for four-wheeler and two-wheeler parking, and, importantly, the positive response to cycle stand usage at the pilot Metro stations.

In June 2024, the Directorate of Urban Land Transport (DULT) conducted an assessment of cycle parking facilities at 10 Metro stations, including Nagasandra, Peenya, Mahalakshmi, Rajajinagar, Mahakavi Kuvempu Road, Jayanagar, Yelachenahalli, Konanakunte Cross, Swami Vivekananda Road, and Baiyapanahalli.

The assessment revealed high weekday occupancy rates, up to 113%, for cycle parking at stations like Yelachenahalli, Konanakunte Cross, and Swami Vivekananda Road, indicating strong demand. In contrast, stations like Rajajinagar, Mahalakshmi Layout, and Peenya showed low usage due to ample last-mile public transport options. The study also highlighted a higher demand for cycle parking at high-ridership stations and a preference for parking within paid areas, which offer better security through surveillance.
