Telecom companies are set to miss the fresh July 4 deadline to fully implement the national mobile number portability (NMNP) across the country.

State-run telecom companies BSNL and MTNL have written to the department of telecommunications (DoT) to extend the new July 4 deadline as they would not be able to complete technical changes to their networks due to changes in national numbering plan (NNP) and this could take some more time. However, private telecom companies are ready to meet the July 4 deadline for rolling out nation-wide MNP, said a DoT official.

In April this year, telecom body COAI had sought extension for implementing nationwide MNP beyond May 3 deadline as they were had not put in place the system required.
