A day after an official with the Uttar Pradesh food regulator said detergent was found in one of the milk samples of Mother Dairy, the co-operative asserted on Wednesday that its products were “absolutely safe” and that the sample was collected before it reached the quality-testing stage.

Mother Dairy managing director S Nagarajan said: “It is unfair that loose milk samples collected at the village level, which were yet to be accepted processing at our factory, have now been attributed to the Mother Dairy brand.” He said the company had a robust system in place that would have detected any impurity. Nevertheless, Mother Dairy has sent the samples for re-testing at a lab in Kolkata.
