Mahindra TUV300 ‘compact’ SUV launched today in India at an introductory price starting at Rs 6.90 lakh (ex-showroom Pune). Chairman and Managing Director Anand Mahindra launched Mahindra TUV300 from company’s Chakan Plant in Maharashtra.

Mahindra TUV300, which comes only in with a diesel engine, has been launched in seven variants. The top model T8 AMT (auto gear shift technology) will cost Rs 9. 20 lakh (ex-showrom price – Delhi).

“The TUV300 embodies Mahindra’s tough and rugged DNA which makes me confident that it will be a brand creator in its segment and find favour both in India and globally,” M&M Group Chairman Anand Mahindra told reporters.

TUV300 will take on the likes of Ford EcoSport and Renault Duster that are priced between Rs 7.88 lakh and Rs 13.54 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi).

Besides, it will also compete with compact crossovers such as Toyota Etios Cross, Hyundai i20 Active and Fiat Avventura, which are priced in a range of Rs 6.23 lakh and Rs 8.89 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi).

Commenting on the production capacity, M&M Executive Director Pawan Goenka said the company has the capacity to produce 5,000 units of TUV300 a month.

“Production capacity can be further enhanced depending upon the market demand,” he added.

Asked if the company plans to launch a petrol version of the vehicle, Goenka said, “We are developing 1.2 litre (model) with Ssangyong which will debut this fiscal. In the next 3-5 years, all the models we launch would have petrol engine option.”

Lately there has been a decline in the utility vehicle segment due to poor rural demand. This had major impact on Mahindra and Mahindra, but with the launch of Mahindra TUV300, the situation is expected to improve.

“The compact SUV segment will grow in the future. This new product will be critical in for M&M and given the track record of the company, if they can price and position the product right, this new vehicles will do great in the market,” said Abdul Majeed, Partner, Price Waterhouse Coopers.

Mahindra has planned the launch of the vehicle at a time when the compact SUV segment is lacking new products and the festive period in western and eastern region of India will kick with Ganesh Chaturthi on September 17 followed by Dushera and Diwali. The sales during the festive period accounts for 30% of the total volumes in a year, reported FE’s Malyaban Ghosh.
