Airtel opens 5G network APIs to developers through Nokia tie-up

Subscription-based access aims to spur new use cases and monetisation opportunities across sectors.

Finnish telecom equipment manufacturer Nokia has partnered with telecom operator Bharti Airtel to give developers and enterprises access to the telco’s pan-India network capabilities through its Network as Code platform, to enable new 5G-led applications and commercial models.

The collaboration follows successful trials and will make Airtel’s network APIs (application programming interface) available on a subscription basis to developers, system integrators and enterprises, the firms said in a statement.

Nokia added that the platform will allow users to build advanced solutions by tapping Airtel’s AI, 5G and edge computing strengths without dealing with underlying network complexity.

“We are happy to partner with Nokia for network APIs and enable the ecosystem to leverage our network capabilities for automation and building secure and innovative digital services,” Sharat Sinha, CEO, Airtel Business said.

Arvind Khurana, head of cloud and network services, India at Nokia, said the partnership strengthens its developer-focused strategy. “Our partnership with Airtel represents a significant step in expanding the Network as Code ecosystem. It demonstrates our commitment to helping telecommunications providers monetise their network investments while fostering innovation,” Khurana said.
