Paris has been under an infestation of bed bugs. Several cities in France are under extensive fear of insects. This has prompted concerns about health and safety since the Olympic Games are close.

Bed bugs are parasitic insects that are visible to the naked eye. They tend to inhabit dark spaces usually in cracks of beds, sofas and other possible dark places. They are also commonly found in fabric seats in public areas.

Though these bugs do not possess the ability to jump or fly, they spread rapidly by clinging to clothing and other items like bags and suitcases. They feed on human blood which causes severe itching and allergic reactions.

According to the National Health Service, these bugs are not particularly harmful but their bites itch and it can rarely cause any serious reaction.

Bedbugs, highly adaptable, can infest via luggage, furniture, or even clean-looking homes, hiding in wall hollows. Beware used furniture and mattresses. Visual inspections are crucial.

Cases of bed bug infestation have reportedly been on an increase over the past 20 years. In America 1 out of every 5 people have either suffered from bed bug infestation or they know someone who has dealt with them in a hotel or at home.

The itching caused by the bed bug bites can be treated with an over-the-counter hydrocortisone cream or an oral antihistamine. Mostly, the bites tend to go away on their own in about two weeks and it also depends on how sensitive your skin is to insect bites.

It is advisable to not scratch too much as it can cause injury to skin which can cause infection. A doctor’s visit is advised if the itching or swelling only worsens over several days. The doctor might prescribe steroids or an antibiotic.

Allergic reactions caused by the bites include excessive itching and a hive-like rash. In rare extreme cases, victims with very sensitive skin can suffer a severe reaction which causes dangerous swelling and difficulty in breathing. Such cases require immediate medical attention as it can be deadly.
