In a bid to help the commuters, Karnataka government has issued a new diktat on uniform taxi fare in the state. The latest order by the Karnataka Transport Department will cover all taxis plying in the state. Most importantly, cabs run by both Ola and Uber will also come under the new rule. This means that usual city taxis, which have meters to check the fare, and app-based taxis services will have a common fare structure. The PTI report says that the fare structure has come into force with immediate effect. The new uniform fare structure removes the possibility of surge pricing by the app-based taxi services. So far, neither Ola nor Uber have released any statement in this regard.

Karnataka Taxi Fares: What’s the latest pricing structure

  • The new pricing scheme has divided the cabs running in the state in three categories. All vehicles running as the cabs have been categorised on the basis of their costs.
  • For vehicles priced at Rs 10 lakh or less, the minimum fare is established at rs 100 for distances up to four km, accompanied by an additional charge of Rs 24 for each extra kilometer.
  • In the case of vehicles priced between Rs 10 lakh and Rs 15 lakh, the minimum fare is Rs 115, and the per-kilometer cost is Rs 28.
  • For vehicles exceeding Rs 15 lakh in cost, the minimum fare is fixed at Rs 130, with an additional charge of Rs 32 for each subsequent kilometer.

Karnataka: What about waiting charges in the new uniform fare system

  • Regarding the waiting charges, the order by the transports department states that the first five minutes during the ride will be free. After that, the commuter is liable to pay Re 1 for every minute hereafter.
  • “In addition, app-based aggregators can collect five percent GST as well as toll charges from the passengers,” the new order stated.
  • “For cabs booked between 12 am and 6 am, operators can charge an extra 10 percent,” the order further added.
