The shift towards green logistics requires a resolute and comprehensive strategy, one that transcends mere intent and triggers a holistic transformation across all the key elements of logistics operations. The heightened scrutiny of environmental, social, and governance (ESG) norms and the growing ESG awareness has underscored the urgent need for logistics companies to elevate their commitment and actions towards mitigating the environmental consequences of logistics operations.

The magnitude of the challenge demands an unwavering commitment to tangible and far-reaching outcomes. To substantiate the collective desire for a reduced environmental footprint, logistics enterprises must adopt an all-encompassing approach.

First and foremost, a paradigm shift towards sustainable modes, such as rail and maritime transport, is necessary. The Sagarmala project aimed at strengthening the port and river transport ecosystem and dedicated freight corridors (DFCs) aimed at enhancing rain logistics transport capacity will build the required scale of the green logistics narrative in the country. Green mobility, which is gradually growing its share in the logistics transport ecosystem, needs to be encouraged further through enabling policy formulation, incentives and charging infrastructure development.

The transition towards alternative fuels, whether in the form of electric or hybrid technologies, is a cornerstone in the journey towards greener logistics. Concurrently, the overhaul of infrastructure to embrace energy-efficient technologies is the need of the hour. Warehouses, distribution centres, and offices must adopt sustainability, minimising overall energy consumption.

When it comes to packaging, a strategic overhaul is imperative. The adoption of eco-friendly and biodegradable materials is not merely a choice but a responsibility. Packaging optimisation, encompassing right-sized packaging practices, will not only reduce material usage but also enhance transportation efficiency by minimising wasted space.

Moreover, traceability, facilitated by advanced technologies, is paramount in identifying and rectifying inefficiencies or environmentally detrimental practices. Collaborating closely with suppliers and ensuring their adherence to green practices is fundamental in permeating sustainability throughout the entire supply chain.

Technology integration, driven by the Internet of Things (IoT) and data analytics, is a linchpin in this transformative journey. Real-time monitoring and management of logistics operations enable agile decision-making and resource optimisation. Data analytics serves as a compass, guiding companies towards areas of improvement and informed decision-making to enhance overall sustainability. Simultaneously, the optimisation of delivery routes through the integration of cutting-edge technology is non-negotiable. This will not only curtail mileage and fuel consumption but also pave the way for a more efficient and eco-friendly logistical network.

Beyond compliance, logistics companies must actively engage with industry associations and policymakers, advocating for sustainable practices and contributing to the formulation of supportive policies. The logistics industry must align itself with the country’s 2070 net-zero emission target.

Implementing comprehensive training programs to instil a deeper understanding of the significance of green logistics empowers employees to become stewards of sustainability. Fostering a culture of environmental responsibility and encouraging employee involvement will galvanize the workforce towards shared sustainability goals.

Lastly, stakeholder collaboration stands as an essential pillar. Partnerships with suppliers, customers, and other stakeholders create a network that collectively propels the industry towards greener logistics solutions. The exchange of best practices within the industry serves as a catalyst, inspiring others to embrace and implement sustainable measures.

Only through a comprehensive and inclusive approach can logistics companies fulfil their obligation to the environment and, in doing so, contribute meaningfully to a sustainable future. According to experts, the logistics industry is expected to play a critical role in making India a $26 trillion economy by FY2048.  A robust green logistics landscape will make sustainability the core element of economic growth.
